Was really impressed with works by Leo Villareal at the San Jose Museum of Arts. Some sample of his work  http://www.villareal.net/index.html

Also in the same museum was Camille Scherrer's Le Monde Des Montagnes. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Onr8d4Wfo6I. (think that I'm heading towards this direction)

It's taking forever to upload anything! Trying again tomorrow.

Cash Back

Similar to Le Monde Des Montagnes, hidden meanings appear on screen when bank notes are placed on the designated area.

As a matter of fact, this provocative piece was presented in parallel with Le Monde Des Montagnes.

PROPOSAL

Based on Camille Scherrer's Le Monde Des Montagnes, I have decided to attempt to create an augmented reality piece because I am intrigued by the fact that I (as the author) am able to inject and added layer of meaning on a readily made book. Also, it is relevant for a graphic design major like myself as it combines the traditional form of a book with some form of interactivity that would further engage the audience.

The setting will be based on a “study-desk” and will consist of a book, a table lamp, sensor and a screen/projector. Basically, the visitor, when flipping through "the book" will activate animated sequences, creating an augmented reality experience. At this point, I am thinking about pages with colors spelt-out. When activated, there should be animated sequence (images/words?) associated with the meaning of that color). I am aiming for the "visual thesaurus" sort of effect.

Some other things that I have had in mind are the addition of background music (whether or not it should also have a certain amount of randomness to it or the mood/speed of the music is dependent on the emotions associated with the color) and possibly replacing the book with a 3-dimensional object. I am weary of replacing with something drastically different, as I am unsure about how the nature of different objects will activate the animated component. Also wondering if there's an option to extract the materials for the animated sequence. I am also interested to incorporate some sort of movement and have the brightness from the light vary based on different situations. At this point, I am also still struggling in between the method of construction (Max vs. Flash).

Ah yes, I never put it up there, but the white cube will have "random" moods, thus generating different combination of 2 moods that affects the animated sequence on screen/projector.

CURRENT PROGRESS

What I'm trying to do

The boxes

Currently using normal paper as a material to build mock boxes to run tests. However, still deciding if I should use thicker materials (i.e. mount board) to build the final version.

Tracking

Currently tracking using fiduciary markers on each side of the colored surfaces. A unique id is pasted on each surface to run tests. Will probably attempt to use infrared ink on the final piece and track these markers using an infrared camera (Katie’s helping me with this). So far, have only found pens and ink versions. Will have to figure out how to make it work.

On the brighter side, Barney’s been a great help in figuring out the Max portion of linking the markers to the animation (which is currently flat images that changes based on the id on each marker) to the video camera. Right now, the image that is on the surface can also be rotated.

The set

Will have to set up a second camera that will provide the live-stream portion of the project, as well as the projector. Also, will have to figure out where to locate the (tentatively) infrared camera. The initial plan was to have it at the sides of the set, but that would mean 2 cameras to detect the markers (?). The example that was provided required a see through glass so that the markers can be detected from below. Suggestions?

Others

Part of the plan was to include a background for the 4 different combinations. Will probably leave this, and possibly background music for the last part of the project.

I got to see a little bit of the Villareal show last weekend but I ran out of time. He was part of a huge installation at ccaC in 2000 which transformed what is now the upstairs gallery of the Wattis into a giant rolling dune of memory foam. I think it was "Rooms for Listening".
As to the augmented reality books, there is a way to do this all in MAX with the openGL objects and video tracking, but the more common way is with Flash. Another consideration is whether you want a system which will determine the position and orientation of the book visually or by some other sensor.
For visual tracking, look at fiducial markers.

I met some great developers this week at the Exploratorium. Amongst them was Eric Sokolofski who has developed a flash library for Flash Augmented Video. His site is here: http://words.transmote.com/wp/flarmanager/
Eric seemed enthusiastic about offering technical help or suggestions to an artist, such as yourself, who is interested in implementing this. If you are raring to go, you can contact him through his website and CC me in the email to let him know you are the student I already mentioned to him.

wow, Camille Scherrer's stuff is great! I have always been interested in how augmented reality works. I wonder what the advantages and disadvantages of doing a augmented reality project in flash versus Max's openGL object?

I would say, Flash is better suited to rendering animations easily. Max is a great place to work if you want to build it yourself and work out all the nuances in a friendlier coding environment than Actionscript3/C++/Java.
